The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is opening its doors in Los Angeles in April with an exhibit celebrating the works of Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki.
The exhibit will share work from Miyazaki’s career with over 300 objects, some of which have never been shown outside of Japan. The exhibit will be the first of its kind in North America.
Toshio Suzuki, who co-founded animation company Studio Ghibli with Miyazaki, said that he hopes visitors will be able to learn about Miyazaki’s creative process.
The exhibit, which will have seven sections, will include original character drawings from movies like Kiki’s Delivery Service and Princess Mononoke. Miyazaki’s work with Isao Takahata, who also co-founded Studio Ghibli, will be shown.
Visitors will also learn about the worlds Miyazaki created and his early works including Heidi, Girl of the Alps and Lupin the 3rd: The Castle of Cagliostro, from 1979. The museum will show some of Miyazaki’s movies in Japanese and English, too.
Jessica Niebel of the Academy Museum said she hopes that both new and old fans of Miyazaki will enjoy the exhibit. Museum director Bill Kramer said that this will be a fitting first exhibit for the museum as it shows how the Academy Museum will feature things from around the world.
The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures plans to open on April 30, 2021.
