The winners of the 2020 Drone Photo Awards have been announced. They include views of cities during the pandemic, fish shot from above, and skyscrapers that look like a spaceship.
The Drone Photo Awards are part of the Siena Awards Festival, which takes place in the Italian city of the same name from October 24 to November 29. The competition has eight categories for single photos, two for videos, one for a series of photos, and also awards for Drone Photographer of the Year.
This year’s Drone Photographer of the Year is Australian photographer Jim Picôt. His winning photo, “Love Heart of Nature,” shows a group of salmon in Australia swimming in the shape of a heart, with a shark swimming inside it.
The winner of the Empty Cities: Life Under Covid-19 category was Israeli photographer Tomer Appelbaum. Appelbaum’s “Black Flag” photo is of thousands of Israeli’s protesting Prime Minister Netanyahu in Tel Aviv’s Rabin Square, while staying a safe distance from each other.
In the Nature category, the winning photo,”Gray Whale Plays Pushing Tourists” was taken by Joseph Cheires from Mexico. The photo is of a gray whale that is known around the Adolfo Lopez Mateos Port in Mexico for following and playing with tourist boats.
The best photos from the Drone Photo Awards will be shown at the Above Us Only Sky Exhibition at the Accademia dei Fisiocritici in Siena, one of Italy’s oldest science museums. The exhibition takes place on the same dates as the Siena Awards Festival.
